About Cycling Power

Cycling power is the most accurate metric for measuring cycling performance and training intensity. Power meters provide real-time data on your effort level.

Power Metrics

  • Watts: Instantaneous power output
  • FTP: Functional Threshold Power (max sustainable for 1 hour)
  • Power-to-Weight: Watts per kilogram of body weight
  • Normalized Power: Adjusted power for variable efforts

Power Training Zones

  • Zone 1 (Active Recovery): <55% of FTP
  • Zone 2 (Endurance): 55-75% of FTP
  • Zone 3 (Tempo): 75-90% of FTP
  • Zone 4 (Threshold): 90-105% of FTP
  • Zone 5 (VO2 Max): 105-120% of FTP
  • Zone 6 (Anaerobic): 120-150% of FTP
  • Zone 7 (Neuromuscular): >150% of FTP

Power-to-Weight Standards

  • Recreational: 2.0-3.0 W/kg
  • Good Amateur: 3.0-4.0 W/kg
  • Elite Amateur: 4.0-5.0 W/kg
  • Pro Continental: 5.0-6.0 W/kg
  • World Tour Pro: 6.0-7.0+ W/kg

Improving Your Power

  • Consistent training with structured workouts
  • Proper nutrition and hydration
  • Adequate recovery and sleep
  • Strength training for cycling muscles
  • Regular testing to track progress
